A gleaming white edifice sits atop the sunken hull of the U.S.S. Arizona, a memorial to the soldiers who are still entombed here from the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Tours are free, and include a documentary on the “Day of Infamy” before embarking on a Navy shuttle boat to the U.S.S. Arizona. The Byodo-In Temple was built in 1960 to commemorate the centennial of the arrival of Japanese immigrants in Hawai’i, and is a replica of a 1,000 year-old Buddhist temple in Japan. See a wooden statue of Buddha sitting on a gold-leaf lotus blossom and large ponds filled with colorful carp.
