Spending at afternoon at this world-famous beach should be on the must-do list for any visitor to Hawaii. This sunken volcanic crater is a snorkeler’s paradise with clear, shallow waters, and is known for its abundant coral reefs and tropical marine life. Encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles, manta rays, and colorful tropical fish, such as the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, the Hawaii state fish. Winter hours are 6 a.m.-6 p.m., the preserve is closed all day on Tuesdays. Entrance fee is $1 per car, $5 per person. Masks, fins, snorkels and lockers are
available for rent at the beach.

Pearl Harbor

A gleaming white edifice sits atop the sunken hull of the U.S.S. Arizona, a memorial to the soldiers who are still entombed here from the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Tours are free, and include a documentary on the “Day of Infamy” before embarking on a Navy shuttle boat to the U.S.S. Arizona. Other historic sites to visit at Pearl Harbor include the Battleship U.S.S. Missouri and the U.S.S. Bowfin submarine, and the new Pacific Aviation Museum at Ford Island. U.S.S. Arizona Memorial.

Tucked away in the foothills of the Ko’olau Mountains is a memorial park and shrine to peace, harmony and tranquility. The Byodo-In Temple was built in 1960 to commemorate the centennial of the arrival of Japanese immigrants in Hawai’i, and is a replica of a 1,000 year-old Buddhist temple in Japan. See a wooden statue of Buddha sitting on a gold-leaf lotus blossom and large ponds filled with colorful carp.
